Dr. James R. Schroeder
Dr. Jim originally founded Leadership by Design with the goal of developing the unique and collective strengths of individuals within an organization. The founding belief was that the building blocks of any organization rest not in its products or services, but in its people. During this time, Dr. Schroeder and his team worked with and supported thousands of individuals by focusing on the importance of understanding one's unique strengths, interpersonal relationships, and leadership skills development at every level of an organization.
Dr. Jim's distinguished career as a dentist, leadership consultant and advocate for “organizational change and development” continued for the next 35 years. While he served a number of industries -ranging from education, the non-profit sector and medical/health, his true passion was working and coaching dentists. As a dental business coach, he helped dentists and their teams enhance their work culture, increase profitability and seamlessly navigate the multitude of transitions that take place within the lifespan of a dental practice. He always believed that the growth and development of people and relationships, combined with sound business practices were the best ways to attain any goal - and navigate change effectively. His proven leadership and relational experience have led him to the mentoring of dozens of dental professionals. In addition, he was a highly sought-after speaker, educator and author, providing numerous articles that have been published both locally and nationally.
Dr. Jim's background in leadership spans multiple roles and industries. In 2012, he served as chief consultant to lead the five-year strategic planning process for the VCU School of Dentistry, where he also served as an adjunct faculty member for more than 20 years. For more than a dozen years, he served in roles as an advisory board member and board chairman for Chesterfield Country Schools, one of the largest school systems within the state. Armed with a passion for improving access to dental healthcare throughout Virginia, Dr. Jim has sustained a strong devotion to community involvement and service. He was instrumental in the co-founding of Crossover Health Center, the largest free medical/dental clinic in Virginia, and has served as an elected board member for the Richmond Dental Society, Virginia Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and Needle's Eye Ministries for multiple years.
